See It!

See performance artist Carvens Lissaint deliver his passionate protest poem Put the Financial Aid in the Bag. This performance highlights the dynamic power of performance poetry to meaningfully engage audiences, and the power of poetry to question social, political, educational, and economic processes. In this particular poem Lissaint is advocating for more equitable access to education. (length 5:00)

See Joshua Bennett perform his opus to his sister, Tamara, in the YouTube video below. You can read more about Bennett in the magazine article Joshua Bennett Performs Today on the Read It! page. This performance shows that 'protesting' does not need to be about universal or major issues, it just needs to be genuine and heartfelt. In this poem Bennett promotes understanding of deafness for his sister, and self reflects on his prior treatment of her. (length 2:29)

To see another living poet (have you noticed that often the poets you're asked to analyse are dead!) go to YouTube and type in Brian Turner. He is an Iraq War veteran turned award winning poet, and his poetry raises awareness about what soldiers experience and suffer in war. The one I found most compelling was The Hurt Locker. (length 3:50)
